If your healthcare provider suspects you may have breast cancer, he or she may perform further tests. These may include:

  • Breast ultrasound: Sound waves are used to make detailed pictures, called sonograms, of areas inside the breast.
  • Diagnostic mammogram: A diagnostic mammogram is a more detailed evaluation of the breast targeting an abnormality seen on a screening mammogram.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): this breast scan uses a magnet linked to a computer to create detailed pictures of areas inside the breast.
  • Biopsy: Tissue and or fluid is removed from the breast for evaluation under a microscope. There are several different kinds of biopsies, such as fine-needle aspiration, core biopsy and open biopsy.
